Every year over 15,000 children flee domestic abuse to seek sanctuary in a women’s refuge. Most arriving only the clothes on their back; these children have either witnessed or experienced physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. According to the Birmingham Crisis Centre, over 50% of the children have suffered sexual abuse – 70% at the hands of their father! These are traumatised children who urgently need ‘crisis recovery’ support which is the essential first stage on the long road to trauma recovery.
Our mission extends beyond mere support; we aim to provide every refuge child with coping strategies that will help them avoid turning to drink and drugs as their coping mechanism, one gentle step at a time. With hundreds of therapeutic sessions planned this year, our commitment is clear, but the need is enormous, and every little bit of help makes a huge difference.
